What We Know About THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

With only 18 months until the release of The Avengers sequel, we’ve decided to put every bit of news, information and rumour that we can find into this post to keep you as informed as possible.
We’ll be adding new tidbits here regularly, so make sure you keep checking back!

Here is what we know so far:

Cast and Crew:
Joss Whedon will be writing and directing once again.
Returning Cast Members: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Cobie Smulders, Samuel L. Jackson.
New Cast Members: James Spader (Ultron), Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Pietro Maximoff / Quicksilver), Don Cheadle, Thomas Kretschmann (Baron Wolfgang von Strucker), Paul Bettany (The Vision),
- Non-Returning Cast Members: Tom Hiddleston :(
- Release Date: 1st May 2015 (USA)

- RDJ has signed another Marvel Contract:
After IM3, Downey’s contract with Marvel was completed. Marvel and Team Downey have since then renegotiated, with Downey signing on for Avengers 2 and Avengers 3. It’s rumoured that his contract also states that he is to be consulted with on all matters concerning the future of Tony Stark / Iron Man. No word as of yet on if there will be an IM4.

Production:
- The Avengers: Age of Ultron will be shot in Shepperton Studios, England, in early 2014, with rumoured exterior shots to be done throughout London.
- It will also shoot in the Aosta Valley region of Italy, South Korea and South Africa.

Possible Plot Points / Story Spoilers:
- There will be lots more Hawkeye and Black Widow:

It’s very much a global Avengers film. A lot of the movie has to do with their place not just in America, but the world. Part of the fun for me, definitely this time around, is writing Hawkeye. He did get possessed pretty early by a bad guy and had to walk around all scowly for most of the movie so now it’s nice to actually have the character there and see him interact with the other guys. - Ultron will NOT be associated with Hank Pym:

We’re doing our own version of the origin story of Ultron….We were crafting our own version of it where [Ultron’s] own origin comes more directly from the Avengers were already know about. The other thing is in the origin story there was Hank Pym, so a lot of people assumed he was going to be in the mix, but he’s not,” he said. “We’re basically taking the things from the comics for the movies that we need and can use. A lot of stuff has to fall by the way side. Joss Whedon via. MTV

-Thanos will NOT be appearing:

We have to stay grounded. It’s part of what makes the Marvel universe click — their relationship to the real world. It’s science fiction, and Thanos is not out of the mix, but Thanos was never meant to be the next villain. He’s always been the overlord of villainy and darkness. Joss Whedon via. IGN

Bit deceiving, considering The Avengers post-credit sting. Perhaps Thanos will play a larger role than we originally thought in Guardians of the Galaxy.

- Whedon is drawing inspiration from The Godfather II:

The model I’m always trying to build from, or my guiding star, is The Godfather: Part II, where a ton has happened in between and it’s a very different movie, but you don’t need any information. It’s there in the film about what’s happened since, what’s different, and why is this a different film; why is it a different kind of structure and why is it darker? It’s all there. You’re in the vernacular of the first movie and you’re just ready to pick up in this new place, and hopefully that’s what will happen with my movie. Joss Whedon via AlloCiné

- Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver will not be linked to Inhumans:

Well, Inhumans is something that we are definitely thinking about and we think there’s great potential there for a great movie. But, no, no — we have not linked those two. Kevin Feige via Huffington Post

- You can see the new AVENGERS TOWER in Captain America: The Winter Soldier:

You get a quick glimpse, I don’t know if you noticed, of the new Stark Tower – which is not the Stark Tower it’s the new Avengers Tower in Captain America: The Winter Soldier]. We show it in there. It goes by *snaps* real fast during that [SPOILER] sequence. But it’s there. Kevin Feige via /Film

- Joss is going to destroy South Korea:

– Filming seems to be going well so far:

- The opening act revealed?
The guys over at Latino-Review (who always seem to be right on the money when it comes to Marvel spoilers) have revealed that they’re aware of how Age of Ultron will begin. Read on, if you dare:

The opening sequence is a big action scene that shows The Avengers attacking Baron Von Strucker’s Hydra cell (as seen in the post-credits of CA:TWS). Von Strucker is in possession of Loki’s sceptre and other Chitauri weapons as well as the corpse of a leviathan. Quicksilver and the Scarlett Witch are fighting alongside Von Strucker, and the Scarlett Witch uses her powers to cast a hex on Hulk into thinking the leviathan is alive and there is some serious Hulk-smashing (could this be when we see the Hulkbuster Iron Man suit?). The Avengers win the battle (obviously) and go back to the Avengers Tower, formerly known as the Stark Tower, in NYC for a sick party. The team take turns trying to pick-up Thor’s Mjolnir. In doing so, the arm of Tony’s suit pops off. Steve Rogers can budge it a little, but can’t pick it up (an homage to the comics, where Captain America is the only other person who can lift the hammer. Will we see this in the final scenes of the film?). In the party scene, we will also find out that Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff have a thing for each other, romantically (classic Joss. Buffy/Angel anyone?). Banner is afraid of taking things further for fear of hulking out and hurting her. We also learn that Jane Foster is no more, she’s left Thor to be with Richard (Chris O’Dowd, Thor 2).

So, there you have it. The opening 20 minutes of the movie. Is it 2016 yet?
