The long rumoured Agent Carter TV series may be a step closer to fruition, with whispers emerging that Hayley Atwell has signed on to star.
There is little known about the potential series at the moment, but it is likely that the show will take place after the disappearance of Captain America and during the origins of S.H.I.E.L.D., as we saw in the Agent Carter Marvel One-Shot (featured on the Iron Man 3 Blu-Ray).
The rumours are emerging from an unnamed source who spoke to The Mirror, who incidentally have a reputation for inaccurate reporting, though it has not stopped the rumour mill from spreading this news like wildfire.
The Mirror is claiming that the show will air before the end of 2014 and will likely be broadcast by ABC or through Netflix:
[box]This is a massive deal for both Hayley and Marvel comic fans. It’s Marvel’s major project of 2014, and it will be a big budget production. Hayley is absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity and is incredibly grateful to Marvel fans who have basically been campaigning for a spin-off show for the past six months. It means moving to LA for six months but her friends and family are all behind her, and this is a huge opportunity.[/box]
Atwell spoke to Digital Spy last year, stating her interest in reprising her role as Peggy, stating when asked about possible TV show plans:
[box]I read about that too. The one-shot was so successful, the fanbase were like, ‘We want more of Peggy!’. I think Marvel probably take that very seriously, and it’s certainly something I would be a part of doing. I’d be interested to show different sides of Peggy. Although she’s kick-ass, and she can be aggressive and she can be just as competent as the men, it’d be nice to show that she’s a feminist in a way. It’s not just about her being aggressive and as aggressive as the men in those action sequences, but being able to be a little bit more rounded as a person.[/box]
She also spoke about the lack of female superheroes:
[box] Where are the women? Where are the women who are leading and not just the hot sex symbol in the tight outfits, or the aggressive ones with their sexy action sequences? Where are the ones that are battling with their own identity like Iron Man is? Or trying to make a difference in the forefront?[/box]
Personally, I’m very excited for the possibility of this happening, considering how much of a fan I am of the character Peggy Carter and of Hayley Atwell herself.
Peggy Carter is an ass-kicking, Nazi-fighting woman who breaks through sexist boundaries and can do it all with perfect lipstick and no hint of spandex.
She has the potential to be great role model and an extraordinary member of the Marvel Universe, plus there is so much possible territory to explore.
Here is hoping this project goes ahead!
